A sporting chance...
In countries where SATW has not yet adopted a school, the charity has undertaken a number of one-off projects. A recent example of specific assistance is the modern sports hall that has been constructed in Villa S. Angelo, a small Italian village devastated by the Abruzzo earthquake in April 2009.
Most of the residents remain in temporary housing and there is a lack of facilities for local communities, especially for schools. The aim of SATW Italy was to give something back to the children that have been hugely affected by this natural disaster. A community sports centre would provide the young people of the town with a place to meet and play together, bringing some normality to their lives.
In 2010 an adventurous, international team from C&W undertook a sponsored climb of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for SATW. (You can read more about their epic journey on page 8.) Monies raised by those from the C&W offices in Italy and Spain - an amazing €37,000 – were earmarked for the Abruzzo project. The target of €65,000 was achieved with added contributions from an earlier Italian fundraising initiative and SATW central funds.
Build work began on a covered 5-aside football pitch, with synthetic grass, an air-supported structure complete with M&E and heating systems, for use throughout the year. On 24 September 2011, the pitch was officially opened by the mayor in Villa S. Angelo and kicked off with a small football tournament between local and C&W teams. The pitch is dedicated to Christian Legat of C&W, a lover of football, who sadly died three years ago.
